Impact Assessment is sent by letter post to all MEPs<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Because of the „urgency of the situation”, the commission decided to – against all principles of good administration – to skip an essential part of the process called impact assessment.<\/p>\n

It is just what it sounds like – a study on how the proposed directive will impact various stakeholders like hunters, reservists, sport shooters, recreational shooters, firearms collectors to name a few.\u00a0Despite requests of the MEPs and rapporteurs, commission has failed – to this date – deliver a proper impact assessment to justify the directive proposal.<\/p>\n

I think we all know why.<\/p>\n

One of the reasons of the conference was to provide a voice to all shooting enthusiasts and an opportunity for each stakeholder group to voice their opinion on the directive. One could characterize it as a live version of the impact assessment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After the conference, everything was put together by Firearms United team of volunteers and now we have two versions:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our letter to the MEPs<\/h2>\n

Thanks to efforts of the volunteers, there was also a hard copy of the shorter version printed out and mailed to each of the MEPs with this letter:<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 16 November 2016, FIREARMS UNITED had the pleasure of hosting the Firearms Directive Conference at the European Parliament in Brussels, chaired by your colleagues Bernd K\u00f6lmel (ECR), Jussi Halla-Aho (ECR), Dita Charanzova (ALDE) and Stefano Maullu (EPP)<\/strong>, with more than 200 guests and journalists in attendance.<\/p>\n

At the Conference, which also featured Alain Alexis as a representative for the EC, it once again became clear, that the EC has not only failed to provide an Impact Assessment for its Firearms Directive proposal, but that the connection between legal firearms owners and crime \/ terrorism, alleged by the EC, simply DOES NOT EXIST<\/strong> \u2013 as pointed out by Stockholm School of Economics scholar Eric Lakomaa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe possibility for legislation targeting legal gun owners [\u2026] to reduce crime is very limited, because, if you look at research, there is no connection between civilian gun ownership and crime.\u201d

\u201cUnfortunately this piece of [proposed] legislation is not what I would consider smart regulation. [\u2026] Any proposal for legislation must be based on an Impact Assessment study and broad public debate. This was not the case.\u201d \u2013 Dita Charanzova MEP (ALDE)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI know from personal experience, that nobody is as interested in gun safety and good gun control than gun owners themselves. [\u2026] They know that every time [\u2026] a jihadist shoots people with a smuggled assault rifle, the media and populist politicians will attack the legitimate gun owner.\u201d

\u201cNothing is being improved upon with this proposal with regards to security. [\u2026] I believe all of this should be firmly rejected. [\u2026] It doesn\u2019t help anyone.\u201d \u2013 Stefano Maullu MEP (EPP)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Given the recent Brexit vote, Trump\u2019s victory in the US, as well as upcoming elections in Austria, France and Germany<\/strong>, as well as the Italian constitutional referendum \u2013 and the Swiss preparing to vote on leaving the Schengen area<\/strong>, should further restrictions on law-abiding firearms owners be imposed \u2013 we strongly feel that the EC\u2019s proposal poses a very real threat to European unification<\/strong>, as millions of frustrated law-abiding citizens might turn to anti-EU parties in their country in response to them being unjustly criminalised.<\/p>\n

We have also enclosed the (shortened) Impact Assessment \u2013 produced by FIREARMS UNITED\u2019s Head of Research Katja Triebel, following the EC\u2019s failure to provide one<\/strong> \u2013 for your information. As is clearly visible from the IA, even \u201cdoing nothing\u201d would achieve more than adopting the EC proposal on the Directive.<\/p>\n

Why?
\nBecause nothing tells that you serious like using pony express instead of just sending an e-mail. We just hope that the letters reach the MEPs in time before the next trilogue which is scheduled for 5th of December.
